1/30/1948Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the spiritual leader of Indian independence, was shot and killed by a Hindu extremist. The 78-year-old Gandhi was shot at point-blank range as he was walking through a garden to a pergola, where he was to deliver his daily prayer meeting.
11/11/1793English pioneer missionary William Carey, 32, reached Calcutta five months after setting sail for India. Later, Carey founded the Baptist Missionary Society, the first of the British Protestant missions agencies.

3/17/1999An international seminar on UN Peacekeeping was co-jointly hosted by Ministry of External affairs and Ministry of Defence at New Delhi from 17 to 19 March 1999. The seminar was conducted by HQ Army Training Command, Shimla on behalf of the Indian Army. A total of 126 foreign delegates from 71 countries participated in the seminar.
