| 10/23/1970 | If India's ""vasectomy fairs"" had hawkers, they might cry, ""Come one, come all & all one billion."" India faces a population of one billion by the year 2000. To hold down that number, the government offered money ($13 to each man) and gifts (a sari for his wife) to those willing to be sterilized. Thirteen dollars was more than three times what an average village worker can earn in one month. In December, a fair held at Kerala attracted 15,000 men. | 1/27/1931 | Mahatma Gandhi was released from jail, ending eight months of imprisonment for his campaign of civil disobedience against British rule. To avoid demonstrations, Gandhi was released late in the evening from the Yerovda jail and put on a night train to Bombay. There was hope in British circles that the release of Gandhi would end the strife and lead to discussions of dominion status. Gandhi made clear, however, that he would persist in his civil disobedience campaign. |
| 1/17/1905 | Dattaraya Ramchandra Kaprekar was born at Dahanu near Bombay. He discovered the shortest possible routes to solve mathematical problems. In 1927, he won the wrangler R. P. Paranjpe Mathematical Prize for an Original Piece of work in mathematics. He discovered 'Kaprekar Constant' in 1946. It is the number ""6174"". The constant 6174 is arrived at and this number then generates itself into one set of numbers called ""self numbers"" that is also known by his name. Kaprekar passed away in 1988. |
